New Delhi. Amidst the war going on across the country, India is continuously strengthening its military power. The country is progressing in the field of science every day. Where ISRO had launched GSLV F17 just a few days ago, so that the country could be saved from enemies. Now a new glory is being prepared for its name. India is continuously strengthening its defense capabilities. In this series, the country has taken another important step in the field of Directed-Energy Weapons (DEW), anti-drone technology and electronic warfare. Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) i.e. tender to develop a state-of-the-art system under the 'SHIELD' programme.
The objective of this project is to create a technology through which energy-based impact can be exerted on enemy drones, radar, sensors and electronic communication systems. This initiative is considered important towards increasing the capability of India's non-kinetic i.e. energy-based defense systems without conventional ammunition.
Work on S-Band High Power Microwave System
S-band High Power Microwave (HPM) system is being developed under SHIELD program. This system will work with the help of GaN solid-state amplifiers.
Through directed energy, this system will be used to test the weaknesses of electronic devices and their security capabilities. It also aims to assess the impact of energy-based attacks on modern electronic systems.
Peak electric field strength up to 3 kV/m
The proposed system will be capable of generating a peak electric field strength of at least 3 kV/m (kilovolt per meter) in pulse mode.
Through this technology, the emphasis is on developing the ability to influence or disable modern drones, sensors and communication equipment using electromagnetic waves. This could strengthen energy-based options against electronic systems on future battlefields.
From radar to drone, impact will be assessed
Through this system, the impact on targets like radar, communication systems, sensors and drones will be studied. This will help in further strengthening counter-UAS i.e. anti-drone technology and electronic warfare capabilities.
High power microwave technology is being developed as a critical defense capability, especially given the increasing use of drones and drone swarms in modern warfare.
Drone swarm has been foiled from a distance of 1 kilometer
DRDO has already worked on prototypes to High Power Microwave (HPM) technology. These prototypes were successful in disrupting a swarm of drones from a distance of 1 kilometer.
Now under the SHIELD program, work is being done in this direction to increase the range and effectiveness of the technology.
Attack on enemy's electronic power without ammunition
A major objective of this initiative is to make India self-reliant in the defense sector and promote indigenous development of non-kinetic weapon systems.
Non-kinetic weapons are based on the ability to impact targets through energy and electronic effects rather than conventional ammunition. Emphasis is being laid on developing such indigenous capabilities through the SHIELD programme.
This initiative can also strengthen the goal of self-reliant India and help in reducing dependence on foreign technology for state-of-the-art defense systems.
