Enzo Maresca has said Manchester City have enough alternatives to provide cover for Erling Haaland in the centre-forward role this season.
Haaland is the only recognised number nine in the Manchester City squad for this campaign after Omar Marmoush left on loan for Tottenham Hotspur.
The shortage of depth in attack has prompted concern before a demanding season, with City set to begin their Champions League campaign against FC Porto tomorrow night. With the fixture list about to become more congested, Maresca said City do have options to step in for Haaland when the striker needs time to recover.
The Italian explained that Antoine Semenyo and Phil Foden can both operate as the central striker if City are missing their key man.
“At the moment, he’s [Haaland] played every minute apart from the Community Shield,” Maresca said.
“We need to protect Erling because the season is very long and he’s going to have games where he needs to recover.
“It depends on the game and the gameplan. Antoine [Semenyo] can play nine. Phil [Foden] has played as a false nine. It depends on the game.”
