Travelers commuting between India and Bangladesh may soon have the opportunity to travel by train again, as both nations prepare to restart services that had been suspended since July 2024.
While you may have previously flown between the two countries, the option to travel by train is set to return. There is good news for travelers, as preparations are underway to resume train services between India and Bangladesh. Notably, the plan involves not only restarting existing services but also introducing new rail connections.
Meeting to Discuss Resumption of Train Services
Railway officials from both India and Bangladesh are set to hold a crucial meeting starting Tuesday to discuss the resumption of train services. A proposal to launch a new train connecting Rajshahi (Bangladesh) and Kolkata could also be tabled during this meeting.
Plans to Reroute the Maitree Express
There is interest in rerouting the Maitree Express—previously operated via the Jamuna Bridge—to run across the Padma Bridge in Bangladesh instead. However, a final decision will only be made following mutual agreement between the two countries.
Plans to Restart Three Trains
The meeting will also address the resumption of the suspended Mitali, Maitree, and Bandhan Express trains. Reports indicate that both countries are preparing to restart these services by next month—October.
When Were Train Services Suspended?
These train services were suspended in July 2024 due to security concerns arising from widespread unrest and a change of government in Bangladesh; however, both nations are now preparing to resume operations.
