Napoli will be without Scott McTominay for their opening Champions League match of the 2026-27 season, a home fixture against Arsenal on Wednesday evening, and the latest updates on Tuesday morning indicate that Massimiliano Allegri now has two additional concerns to manage.
Napoli’s 2026-27 Champions League campaign begins with Arsenal visiting on Wednesday evening, but McTominay will not be available against the reigning Premier League champions, as he is due to undergo a minor procedure on his heart on Tuesday.
The Partenopei have also started the 2026-27 season without Italy international centre-back Alessandro Buongiorno, and he too will be unavailable for Wednesday’s meeting with Arsenal. Luca Marianucci and Giovane are also sidelined for the longer term.
According to the latest reports on Tuesday, Allegri has two fresh injury worries ahead of Arsenal’s visit, with neither Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa nor David Neres taking part in training with the rest of the first-team squad this morning.
That leaves both players highly unlikely to be named in the starting XI against Arsenal on Wednesday, if they are fit enough to feature at all.
Neres came off the bench in each of Napoli’s last two Serie A matches, both of which ended in defeats to Como and Inter.
Anguissa is regarded as the more significant concern, having started all three of Napoli’s league games so far this season and remaining a key figure in the Partenopei midfield whenever he is fit and available.
With McTominay out and Anguissa also likely to miss out, Allegri will have to lean even more heavily on Stanislav Lobotka in central midfield. It is also expected that Kevin De Bruyne could come into the side for his first start of the 2026-27 season against Arsenal on Wednesday. Billy Gilmour and Antonio Vergara appear the most likely options to complete the midfield trio.
