Manchester United and Liverpool are reportedly both keen on signing Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw.
United chose not to strengthen their defensive options during the summer transfer window, and that decision is beginning to look like a significant error.
Across their opening three matches of the 2026/27 Premier League season, United have let in two goals in each game. It is only the second time in the last 50 years that this has happened.
Rival sides have found it far too easy to break through United’s back line and fashion chances regularly. While much of the discussion around United’s needs centred on a left-back, it now looks as though a centre-back should also have been a priority.
Quite apart from current form, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez have shown that they cannot be depended upon to stay fit for a full season. Then there is Matthijs de Ligt, who has not played for several months while recovering from a back injury that required surgery.
United do have Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro in the squad, but both still need an experienced presence alongside them.
According to CaughtOffside, United are admirers of Thiaw.
The report states that both United and Liverpool are closely monitoring Thiaw ahead of the next transfer windows.
Thiaw has impressed since joining Newcastle from AC Milan in 2025, demonstrating notable physical strength, smart reading of the game and technical quality. Unsurprisingly, United are among the clubs keeping an eye on his situation.
CaughtOffside said, “Sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside that Liverpool and Man United have been monitoring Thiaw’s performances, although no formal negotiations or direct talks have taken place.”
Regarding Newcastle’s position, the report adds, “Newcastle, however, have no intention of selling. Thiaw is contracted until 2029 and would reportedly command around £65m-£70m, despite a market valuation closer to €45m.”
United are back in action on Thursday when they begin their Champions League campaign against Sabah.
