In August 2026, a big upswing was seen in the Indian car market in terms of sales. Tata Punch performed brilliantly and won the title of the country's best-selling car. A total of 21,320 units of Punch were sold in August, whereas in August 2025 the company had sold 10,704 units. That means the sales of Punch almost doubled in a year.
With this tremendous growth, Tata Punch overtook Maruti Suzuki WagonR, which had a strong hold on the sales charts for a long time. The main reason for Punch's popularity is its compact SUV design, easy-to-drive size in cities and multiple powertrain options. Apart from petrol, this car is also available in CNG and electric versions. Punch is receiving a good response among customers who want SUV-like looks and modern features at an affordable price.
WagonR got second place
Maruti Suzuki WagonR stood second in sales in August 2026. This month it sold 20,180 units, whereas in August 2025 this figure was 14,552 units. In this way, an increase of about 39 percent was recorded in the sales of WagonR on annual basis.
WagonR has been among the popular family cars in the Indian market for a long time. Its practical design, good cabin space, easy driving and low running costs keep it a favorite among customers. This is the reason why despite lagging behind Punch, WagonR recorded sales of more than 20 thousand units in August.
Swift secured third place
Maruti Suzuki Swift stood at the third position with sales of 19,832 units in August. Last year, in the same month, 12,385 units of Swift were sold. That means there has been an annual increase of about 60 percent in its sales.
Swift is especially liked by those buyers who want a premium hatchback with sporty design, better driving experience and good mileage. The sales gap between Punch, WagonR and Swift in August was not very big, which clearly shows the tough competition in the market for the top position.
Strong jump in sales of Fronx
Maruti Suzuki Fronx took the fourth position with sales of 18,730 units in August 2026. Its 12,422 units were sold in August 2025. Accordingly, the sales of Fronx increased by about 51 percent annually.
Fronx is loved for its SUV inspired design and premium appeal. Its coupe-like looks, modern features and different engine and gearbox options make it especially attractive among young customers and small families.
Ertiga at fifth position
Family MPV Maruti Suzuki Ertiga stood at the fifth position with sales of 18,516 units in August. Its 18,445 units were sold in August 2025. That is, there was almost no change in the sales of Ertiga in one year and its annual growth was almost zero percent.
Despite this, Ertiga managed to maintain its place in the top-10 cars. Its biggest features include ample space for more passengers, a spacious cabin and a practical design to suit the needs of the family.
Difference of only 13 units between Nexon and Dzire
Tata Nexon recorded sales of 18,431 units in August 2026 and stood at sixth position. Its 14,004 units were sold in August 2025. In this way, sales of Nexon increased by about 32 percent on annual basis.
Right behind it was Maruti Suzuki Dzire. 18,418 units of Dzire were sold in August. That means there was a difference of only 13 units between Nexon and Dzire. Dzire sales have increased by about 12 percent compared to last year.
Amidst the growing popularity of SUVs, Dzire's strong performance in the top-10 indicates that the demand for compact sedans among Indian customers has not completely ended yet.
Hyundai Creta at number eight
Hyundai Creta took the eighth position with sales of 16,288 units in August 2026. Its 15,924 units were sold in August 2025. That means there was a slight increase of about 2 percent in the sales of Creta on an annual basis.
Creta has been among the leading cars in the Indian mid-size SUV segment for a long time. Its premium cabin, modern features, comfortable interiors and multiple powertrain options have kept it strong among customers.
Baleno also made place in top-10
Maruti Suzuki Baleno was also included in the top-10 sales list of August 2026. It sold 15,746 units and stood at ninth position. In August 2025, 12,549 units of Baleno were sold. That means an annual increase of about 25 percent was recorded in its sales.
Baleno is popular among customers who want better space, modern features and premium design in a hatchback. The updates made by the company from time to time in features and technology can also help in maintaining its demand.
