Renato Sanches has reportedly brought his difficult spell at Paris Saint-Germain to an end by mutually cancelling his contract in the closing hours of the summer transfer window. The Portuguese midfielder leaves the French capital as a free agent after a disastrous four-year period marked by injuries and failed loan spells around Europe.

A frantic deadline-day departure

According to Record Portugal, the 29-year-old midfielder terminated his deal by mutual consent only hours before the summer transfer window closed. His departure draws the curtain on an intensely frustrating four-year stay in the French capital.

Sanches joined Parc des Princes from Lille in the summer of 2022 amid considerable expectations. Although he won the Ligue 1 title in his first season, the Euro 2016 Young Player of the Tournament and 2016 Golden Boy award winner was unable to nail down a regular place. Repeated injury problems badly limited his game time and halted any chance of building momentum.

His departure makes him the fifth player to leave PSG on a free transfer this summer. Luis Enrique's uncompromising squad revamp has already led to a significant exit of fringe players as the club looks to balance its finances and simplify the dressing-room setup.

A quiet ending to a difficult chapter

The sudden contract termination underlines PSG's urgency in reducing the size of their squad. The mutual agreement enables the reigning European champions to take another unwanted wage off their salary bill, while also giving the Portugal international full freedom to decide his next club.

Sanches had been completely left out of Enrique's plans for the coming season. After failing to make a sustained impression in Paris during his opening campaign, the midfielder then spent three straight years away from the club on loan in an attempt to secure regular playing time.

Those temporary moves eventually brought little success. Sanches made a combined total of only 31 league appearances during spells with Roma in Serie A, Benfica in the Primeira Liga, and Panathinaikos in the Greek Super League.

Enrique's ruthless Paris rebuild

The midfielder's exit is only a minor detail in what has been a landmark summer of transfer activity for PSG. The club has pushed ahead with an aggressive rebuild, bringing in a record €360 million through player sales. Among the notable big-name departures are Bradley Barcola's transfer to Liverpool, Goncalo Ramos's move to AC Milan, and Ibrahim Mbaye's switch to Aston Villa.

Rather than keeping veterans who have fallen out of favour, Enrique has shifted towards a new tactical direction as the club pursues a third straight Champions League title. The PSG hierarchy has strongly supported the Spanish coach by bringing in Maghnes Akliouche, Ferran Torres, and Mika Godts to strengthen the squad.

A potential lifeline in La Liga

Now without a club, Sanches is free to hold talks with interested teams outside the restrictions of the transfer window. The 29-year-old will be eager to revive a career that has stalled sharply since the breakout displays that first made his name a decade ago.

A switch to Spain could provide him with an immediate path back into top-flight football. Sevilla have recently been linked with the midfielder, according to Diario de Sevilla, and his new status as a free agent removes a major financial obstacle for the Andalusian side if they decide to complete a deal.
