Companies like Starlink, Oneweb, Reliance Jio seem to have cleared the way to offer satellite broadband services. According to sources, an inter-ministerial committee has approved TRAI's recommendations for spectrum allocation. A group of secretaries has reportedly approved TRAI's recommendation. However, no official information has been released yet. It is believed that the government may take a decision on this matter in the next few days in the cabinet meeting.

When will the service start?

According to sources, the group of secretaries has got the green light. After that the proposal will now be sent to the Union Cabinet. Once the cabinet approves the proposal, it will become legally enforceable in the country. It is worth noting that major companies like Starlink, Oneweb, Reliance Jio already have the required satellite licenses like GMPCS. Once the cabinet fixes spectrum allocation norms and charges, these companies will be very close to launching commercial services in the country.

Spectrum available for 5 years

As per TRAI's recommendations, satellite broadband spectrum can initially be allotted to companies for a period of 5 years. Depending on market conditions and performance of the company, the government may extend this period by another 2 years. This means the total duration of this arrangement can be up to 7 years.

Duration limited to 5 years

Global companies such as Elon Musk's Starlink normally sought 20-year licenses, but TRAI recommended limiting the period to 5 years due to new and emerging markets. This will give the government an early look at how the market works and how strictly safety standards are being followed.

Since satellite internet is a rapidly evolving technology, the 7-year period will allow the government to easily amend the regulations to suit future emerging technologies. During this period, the government will be able to monitor how strictly foreign and domestic companies are complying with Indian data security regulations. During this 5-year period, the regulator has proposed to charge companies a spectrum fee of 4% to 5% of Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR).
