New Delhi. A new controversy has arisen regarding a new world map released by the United Nations (UN). The map incorrectly depicts India's sovereign territories such as Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh. Along with this, the state border between two states of North-East India, Assam and Nagaland, has also been completely removed from this map. India has recently supported the United Nations' 'Correct the Map' proposal to streamline maps globally. This controversy has come to light during this time.

What are the serious errors in the map?

According to media reports, this new UN map shows some major tampering with India's borders in which Arunachal Pradesh's northern border is shown as the “Indian Line”, but its southern border is marked as the “Chinese Line”. Furthermore, the border between Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland has been removed from the map. Also, in the Aksai Chin area, the eastern border has been shown as “Indian Line” and the western border has been shown as “Chinese Line”. Thus, this integral part of India has been made an area between two conflicting claims. The thing to note here is that in the previous UN map released in 2011, these lines were clearly written as “Claim Lines”. But in this new edition of 2026, it has been removed, due to which the confusion has become more serious. At the same time, the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kashmir region has been shown with dotted lines and a footnote has been added, in which it has been said that an agreement is yet to be reached between India and Pakistan on the final status of this region.

'Correct the Map' proposal and India's stance

Let us tell you that India had supported the UN 'Correct the Map' resolution with the clear understanding that its objective was to technically correct the maps. However, Indian diplomats had already made it clear that support for this resolution does not at all mean that India will accept any inaccurate or misleading delineation of its sovereign boundaries.

At the same time, geopolitical experts believe that such discrepancies in the UN map are extremely worrying for India's territorial integrity. The Government of India has always maintained a strong stance that the entire Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh including Aksai Chin, and Arunachal Pradesh are inalienable and inalienable parts of India. The Ministry of External Affairs is likely to take up the matter officially with the United Nations.
