Dhanteras and Diwali are considered auspicious occasions to buy gold. It often happens that gold prices increase during Diwali and Dhanteras. But still people buy gold. In India, customers generally invest in physical gold, such as jewellery, coins, or bars. However, due to the surge in prices this year, people are also buying impure gold like 9 carat gold.
Due to impurities present in gold, in order to follow sustainable pricing, buyers have become confused about the purity of gold jewellery. The purity of gold is usually checked by hallmarking. Here’s how to check the purity and hallmark of your gold before buying.
How to check purity of gold?
Hallmark: In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certifies gold with a hallmark stamp. If you see a gold hallmark number like 916, you can be sure about the purity of the gold. Hallmarking is a mandatory system that all jewelers have to follow before selling gold, and it acts as a certificate to verify its purity.
Acid Test: This method of checking the purity of gold is very popular among jewellers. A drop of nitric acid is used on a small scratch on the surface of gold after rubbing it with a stone. Reaction reveals purity.
Magnet Test: Gold is non-magnetic, so you will be able to tell the difference easily by placing a strong magnet near the gold. If gold is attracted towards the magnet, then it is impure.
Electronic Testing: Electronic testers are easy-to-use tools that can check the conductivity of gold and determine its purity. They send an electric charge to a gold object that matches the gold resistance, such as 14K or 18K.
Fire Assay Method: This is the most reliable method of testing gold. In this method, gold is melted and its content is analyzed. Although it is very accurate, the fire assay method does spoil some of the gold.
