Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami has strengthened East Zone’s position in the Duleep Trophy by bowling brilliantly. By the end of the third day of play in Chennai on Tuesday, South Zone had scored 242 runs after losing six wickets. Earlier, East Zone had scored a huge score of 708 runs in its first innings. In this way, South Zone is currently 466 runs behind East Zone and has only four wickets left. In such a situation, saving follow-on has also become a big challenge for him.
Shami bowled three short spells during the day and took two wickets for just 17 runs in 11 overs. The pitch was not providing much help to the fast bowlers, but Shami kept the pressure on the batsmen by continuously bowling on the line of the stumps. He dismissed Sheikh Rashid on a personal score of 29 runs. There was a partnership of 56 runs for the third wicket between Rashid and Devdutt Padikkal, which was broken by Shami by LBW on a lightly incoming ball.
Devdutt Padikkal completed his half-century in 65 balls, but shortly after that he became the victim of Mukesh Kumar. Mukesh bowled the ball close to the pad, on which Padikkal tried to play his favorite shot, but the ball did not hit the bat properly. DP Das took an easy catch in the deep. Before this, Mukesh also dismissed South Zone vice-captain Rishik Bhui. Narayan Jagadishan scored 32 runs, but returned to the pavilion after being caught by Shikhar Mohan.
Tilak Verma took charge
Tilak Verma, handling the innings of South Zone, scored unbeaten 56 runs on 133 balls. This was his third consecutive half-century in the tournament. He made a partnership of 66 runs with Shreyas Gopal, but before the end of the day’s play, Shami dismissed Gopal for 26 runs. CV Milind was supporting Tilak without opening the account. A big challenge is facing the South Zone till the stumps. The team still needs 466 more runs to equal East Zone’s score. In such a situation, East Zone has a great opportunity to end the match early on the last day. South Zone will need exceptional performance from the rest of its batsmen to avoid defeat.
