Scott McTominay, the Napoli and Scotland midfielder, has successfully undergone corrective surgery after doctors identified a minor heart issue.

The 29-year-old former Manchester United player was diagnosed with a mild benign arrhythmia, an irregular heart rhythm regarded as non-serious and one that does not pose any major risk to his overall health.

After travelling to Manchester for the procedure on Tuesday, he is now expected to spend a fortnight out of action.

A statement from the Italian club said: "On Tuesday morning, Scott McTominay underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital. The operation was a complete success.

"McTominay will rest for two weeks and then resume training."

Napoli had already set out the likely recovery schedule last week, stating that the player should be "available again after the international break".

McTominay is expected to be back in contention for Napoli after the international break.

As well as missing Napoli’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal on Wednesday night, McTominay will also be absent at the beginning of Sebastien Pocognoli’s spell as Scotland manager, ruling him out of Nations League matches against Slovenia twice, Switzerland and North Macedonia.

McTominay started Napoli’s first two Serie A games of the season, but he was taken off after 56 minutes in the 2-1 home defeat to Como on 30 August.

He then sat out Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to reigning champions Inter Milan, watching from the sidelines as Napoli let a two-goal lead slip away.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side had looked in command after scoring twice in three minutes early in the second half through Matteo Politano and former Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund.

Inter, though, mounted a comeback, with Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram scoring to make it 2-2. Martinez then struck again in the first minute of added time to complete Inter’s comeback win.

With McTominay only due to return to training in two weeks, he will miss Napoli’s next three matches against Arsenal, Bologna and Fiorentina.

However, provided there are no setbacks once he rejoins the squad, he could be in line to feature in Napoli’s first game after the international break against Frosinone on 10 October.

McTominay is now in his third season with Napoli after departing Old Trafford, and he played an important part in the club’s Serie A title triumph in 2024-25.
