Ballon d'Or shortlist sparks global headlines: celebration, disbelief and plenty of questions.

The battle for football's biggest individual honour is now underway. France Football has unveiled its 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, with the winner set to be announced at a much-anticipated ceremony on 26 October. Six Spanish players have been included, while Argentine legend Lionel Messi is back on the list, setting up a heavyweight contest among some of the sport's biggest stars.

The announcement triggered fierce discussion across the football world. The highly competitive shortlist also produced a number of surprise omissions, most notably Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and Egypt's Mohamed Salah, two of the most recognisable figures on European and global pitches in recent years. A number of influential players who played major roles in their clubs' and national teams' success last season were also left out.

Spanish newspaper Marca highlighted the strong Spanish presence among the nominees, with six players included, and also welcomed Lionel Messi's return to the running. However, the paper also made clear its astonishment at the notable omission of Barcelona pair Pedri and Raphinha. Both were vital to last season's La Liga title-winning campaign, while Pedri also won the World Cup with La Roja. Marca also pointed to Cristiano Ronaldo's continued absence for a fourth straight year. Added to that were the snubs of Mohamed Salah, who finished fourth in last year's voting, and Desire Doue, who won every available trophy with Paris Saint-Germain.

Mundo Deportivo turned its attention to Barcelona's three nominees: Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Pau Cubarsi. The award has not returned to the Catalan club's honours list since 2019, when Messi won it for the eighth time. The paper believes Yamal has a real chance of lifting the prize for the first time despite still being under 19, in what is his third nomination after he finished runner-up to Ousmane Dembele last year. It also expressed surprise at the absence of Pedri, Raphinha and Dani Olmo.

In Britain, the Daily Mail centred its coverage on Harry Kane and the pressure surrounding his candidacy after a historic season with Bayern Munich. The striker scored 73 goals and led the club to a Bundesliga and domestic cup double. That return makes him a serious challenger, even with fellow English stars Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham also expected to be in the mix.

The Mirror asked another question: would the best season of Kane's career be enough to make him the first English player to win the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen's memorable triumph in 2001?

The Italian press reacted with frustration.
