Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote in X Post on Wednesday, 'A dangerous pattern is visible in the AAP government of Punjab – if you question the government's failure, the answer will be through threats and torture. Gulzar Singh ji, who comes from the Dalit community and saw his son becoming a victim of drug abuse, only asked the Finance Minister why the government has failed so badly to stop the drug trade. Just on this issue, he was so harassed and humiliated, so much pressure was put on him to apologize that he consumed poison. Wandering from one hospital to another, due to lack of treatment, he finally lost the battle of life.
Rahul further wrote, 'Last week I also spoke to a young man, Mohanjit Singh, who was harassed for protesting against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The job of the government is to answer the public, not to crush those who ask questions. Gulzar Singh ji's family should get justice as soon as possible. The Chief Minister should immediately seek the resignation of the Finance Minister and ensure that there is an independent and impartial investigation in which his name is registered in the FIR.
Let us tell you that during a development program, Gulzar Singh had raised the issue of openly selling drugs in the village with Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. He claimed that drugs are being sold openly in his village. The family and some villagers allege that after raising the issue of drug addiction with Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, people associated with the panchayat were pressurized to apologize to Gulzar. After this pressure, Gulzar became very upset and he consumed poisonous substance. At the same time, he died during treatment.
After the incident, on the statement of Gulzar Singh's son Lakhwinder Singh, the police registered a case against the accused at Didba police station in Sangrur. Police have imposed Section 108 of BNS i.e. abetment of suicide along with relevant sections of SC-ST Act. The names of village sarpanch Baljinder Kaur, her husband Baljeet Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Vicky Singh and Ganna Singh were registered in the FIR.
