The country's major state-run oil marketing companies—Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)—have released new rates of petrol and diesel at 6 am today. On the domestic front, even today, oil companies have maintained stability in the main retail rates amid fluctuations in crude oil prices in the international energy market. In most of the metropolitan cities of the country including the national capital Delhi, the prices of petrol and diesel have remained at the old level. However, there is slight variation in fuel prices across states and cities due to differences in local VAT, freight charges and dealer commission levied by states. What are the fuel prices today in the four major metros of the country? If we look at the fuel prices in the four major metros, petrol and diesel remain the cheapest in Delhi, while in Mumbai the prices are the highest due to high rates of local taxes: New Delhi: In the national capital today, the price of petrol remained stable at ₹ 102.12 per liter and diesel at ₹ 95.20 per liter. Mumbai: In the financial capital Mumbai, the price of one liter petrol has been recorded at ₹111.21 and the price of diesel has been recorded at ₹97.83 per litre. Kolkata: In Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, petrol is being sold at ₹ 113.50 per liter and diesel at ₹ 99.82 per liter. Chennai: In Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, petrol is available at the price of ₹ 107.74 per liter and diesel at ₹ 99.55 per liter. Today's rates in major cities of the country including Lucknow, Patna, Noida, after adjusting for local VAT and transport expenses, today's petrol and diesel rates in other major cities of North India and South India are recorded as follows: City Name Petrol Price (per liter) Diesel Price (per liter) Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) ₹102.68 ₹96.10 Noida / Greater Noida ₹102.45 ₹95.60 Gurugram (Haryana) ₹102.97 ₹95.64 Patna (Bihar) ₹107.24 ₹94.04 Jaipur (Rajasthan) ₹104.88 ₹90.36 Bengaluru (Karnataka) ₹110.82 ₹98.77 Hyderabad (Telangana) ₹116.15 ₹104.23 Ahmedabad (Gujarat) ₹101.83 ₹97.92 Chandigarh ₹101.54 ₹89.47 Why are the prices of petrol and diesel different in every city? This question often arises in the minds of consumers that when crude oil is the same import for the entire country, then why the prices vary so much in different states and cities. The main reason behind this is the tax structure on petroleum products in India. Petrol and diesel are currently outside the purview of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The Central Government collects Central Excise Duty on these, which remains the same throughout the country. After this, each state government imposes VAT (Value Added Tax) and local cess on petrol and diesel as per its financial policies. In states where VAT rates are high, fuel is sold more expensive. Apart from this, the distance of transportation of fuel from the refinery to the petrol pump i.e. freight charges and dealers' commission also play an important role in determining the final retail price.
