Chandigarh: Punjab politics has erupted into a fresh controversy after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government over the alleged suicide of Gulzar Singh, a resident of Sangrur district.
Rahul Gandhi accused the Punjab government of failing to address the drug crisis and alleged that those who question the administration are facing threats and pressure. He demanded that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann seek the resignation of Finance Minister Harpal Cheema and ensure an independent investigation into the matter.

Rahul Demands Cheema's Resignation
Rahul Gandhi claimed that Gulzar Singh, a Dalit man from Dirba in Sangrur, had questioned Finance Minister Harpal Cheema over the alleged unchecked supply of drugs in the state.
He alleged that Gulzar was pressured and humiliated after raising the issue, following which he consumed poison and later died.
Rahul said, “The Chief Minister should immediately demand the Finance Minister's resignation and ensure an impartial investigation.”
AAP Rejects Rahul's Allegations
The Aam Aadmi Party hit back at Rahul Gandhi's allegations, accusing him of spreading misinformation.
AAP said that Gulzar Singh's son himself had stated that no pressure was put on the family by Minister Harpal Cheema. The party claimed that the accused persons had been arrested and the Bhagwant Mann government would take strict action against those responsible.
Gulzar Singh Death Case
According to reports, 47-year-old Gulzar Singh, a resident of Dirba in Sangrur district, allegedly consumed poison on Monday night.
His family claimed that he had raised questions about drug availability during an event attended by Finance Minister Harpal Cheema on September 6.
Following a complaint by Gulzar's family, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Political Battle Over Punjab Drug Issue
The controversy has intensified the political debate over Punjab's ongoing drug problem, with opposition parties targeting the AAP government over law and order and drug control measures.
While Rahul Gandhi has demanded accountability from the state government, the AAP has maintained that strict action is being taken against those involved in the case. The investigation into Gulzar Singh's death is currently underway.
