Many people delay planning for retirement while busy fulfilling their responsibilities. If you have crossed the age of 40 and haven't yet built a fund for your old age, there is no need to worry. You still have 20 years. The government's National Pension System (NPS) is an excellent and safe option for building a retirement fund.
If you start investing ₹10,000 per month in the NPS at the age of 40, you will accumulate a substantial corpus by the time you turn 60.
Understand the math through this calculation:
Age at start of investment: 40 years
Monthly investment: ₹10,000
Total investment period: 20 years (up to age 60)
Total investment over 20 years: ₹24,00,000 (₹24 lakh)
Estimated return: 10% per annum (Historically, NPS investments—comprising a mix of equity and debt—have easily yielded average returns of 9–11%).
Total fund at maturity: Approximately ₹75.93 lakh
This means that over 20 years, your investment of ₹24 lakh will generate wealth gains of approximately ₹51.93 lakh.
What lump-sum amount and pension will you receive upon retirement?
Under NPS rules, you cannot withdraw the entire corpus at once upon turning 60. You are permitted to withdraw a maximum of 60% of the total fund as a lump sum, which is entirely tax-free. You are required to use at least 40% of the remaining corpus to purchase an annuity from a life insurance company.
Pension calculation based on 40% annuity
Total corpus: ₹75.93 lakh
Cash withdrawal (60%): Approximately ₹45.56 lakh
Annuity fund for pension (40%): ₹30.37 lakh
Estimated annuity return (interest rate): 6% per annum
Monthly pension: Approximately ₹15,187 per month
