Companies are promoting it as a big safety feature and customers are also liking it very much. The radars, cameras and sensors installed in ADAS technology detect the dangers encountered while driving in time. This system alerts you when you change lanes, helps you maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and can even apply automatic emergency braking in case of an emergency. But if you are hitting the road considering it to be completely automatic or 'autopilot', then this carelessness can prove costly.

Over-confidence in the system can prove costly

It is often seen that as soon as they get a vehicle with ADAS, people take their hands off the steering or start using mobile phones while driving. This habit can cause an accident. The way ADAS works and its capabilities are different for each vehicle manufacturer. In such a situation, it is very important to read the user manual of your car carefully.

On sudden vehicles coming from the front, sharp turns, or on uphill and downhill roads, many times the sensors are not able to understand the situation at the right time. If you are not alert at such places, an accident can happen. It is the driver's job to keep a constant eye on the traffic and take manual control immediately when needed.

Maintenance of sensors and cameras is most important

The heart of the ADAS system are windshield-mounted cameras and bumper-based radar sensors. If dust, mud, dew or dry debris accumulates on them, the system starts seeing the surrounding things blurry. Poor visibility may cause sensors to give false signals or stop working.

If any ADAS- error or warning light appears on your car's dashboard, never ignore it. First clean the surface of the camera and radar with a clean cloth. If the warning light remains on even after cleaning, then immediately go to an authorized service center and get the car checked.

The nature of roads and weather of India changes every moment. ADAS sensors operate with limited capability during heavy rain, dense fog, strong sunlight reflection or blurred lane markings on roads. On winding roads, the sensors are late in detecting people walking on the roadside or a bike suddenly coming into the lane.

In bad weather or on tricky roads, always control the speed of the car and keep more distance than usual from the vehicle ahead. This technology is helpful in reducing the chances of accidents, but it does not guarantee any miracle. Only responsible driving can keep you and your family safe.
