A major accident took place in Okhla Industrial Area Phase-1 of South-East Delhi on Wednesday morning. During unloading of commercial oxygen cylinders outside the warehouse of SM Traders located at D-23, Okhla Phase-1, a cylinder fell on the road. After this the cylinder exploded with a loud bang. In this accident, one employee of the firm died on the spot, while four other people are said to be seriously injured. As soon as information about the explosion was received, police and fire department teams reached the spot. Five fire brigade vehicles and ambulance also reached the spot. The injured have been sent to the hospital for treatment. Police have started investigating the cause of the accident.

The vehicle had arrived from Ghaziabad carrying a cylinder.

According to the information received from the police, information about the accident was received through DD number 36A at around 10:43 am on Wednesday. Preliminary investigation revealed that a commercial vehicle Tata 407 (registration number DL-1LAJ-3232) loaded with commercial oxygen cylinders from Ghaziabad had reached the warehouse of SM Traders as usual. Laborers working in the warehouse, Umesh, Mohit and Pankaj were removing oxygen cylinders from the vehicle and shifting them inside the warehouse. Meanwhile, a cylinder suddenly fell from the vehicle on the road below. As soon as it fell, there was a huge explosion in the cylinder.

In this accident, 35-year-old Mohit Singh, son of Karamveer Singh, resident of Jaipur, Rajasthan, died on the spot. It is being told that Mohit was working as a helper/worker in SM Traders for the last three years. Umesh, Arvind, Manoj and Pankaj were seriously injured due to the explosion. After the accident, police and fire fighters immediately took all the injured to AIIMS Trauma Center for treatment, where their treatment is going on.

The firm did not have refilling plant, investigation into license started

Initial investigation by the police has revealed that this firm named 'SM Traders' was doing trading and local supply of industrial oxygen cylinders by taking D-23 premises on rent for the last one-two years. No oxygen refilling or cylinder filling plant was found in the premises. According to investigation, the cylinders were coming filled from Ghaziabad through a supplier named Ram Avtar. After this they were supplied to local factories and businessmen of Okhla area. It is being told that about 70 to 80 oxygen cylinders were handled daily in the firm. However, this can be confirmed only after examining the bills, stock register and other documents. After the accident, the police has started checking the documents to the license and necessary permissions of the firm.

Forensic and police team engaged in investigation

After the accident, the police have sealed the incident site and secured it. The exact technical reason for the cylinder explosion is not yet clear. Teams of forensic (FSL) and technical agencies have been called to the spot to investigate this. Along with this, the police is also investigating whether the firm had all the necessary statutory licenses and security clearances to the storage, transportation and handling of oxygen cylinders. The investigation team is collecting necessary evidence from the spot. The firm's documents and records to safety standards are also being examined to ascertain the cause of the accident and any possible negligence.
