Preparation to bring the organization into election mode; Instead of political seniority, grassroots activism and work record are being made the main criteria.

The Indian National Congress is moving rapidly towards major changes in its organizational structure and preparing a new 'future team'. The process of selection of new secretaries of All India Congress Committee (AICC) has been started to hand over important responsibilities at the national level to young and energetic faces within the party. The most important thing is that the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is keeping a direct and sharp eye on this entire selection process.

According to party sources, a list of more than 100 potential youth leaders from across the country has been prepared for the posts of AICC secretaries, who have been called to Delhi for interviews. Rahul Gandhi and organization general secretary K.C. Venugopal himself is talking face to face with these potential candidates. In this selection process, the old culture of giving posts on the basis of traditional political seniority or merely recommendations is being sidelined. Instead, the candidates' work at the grassroots level, their organizational experience, their hold on the state and their ability to strengthen the party in the future are being considered as the main criteria.

Political analysts believe that the Congress high command is working on a strategy to bring the party organization in the states completely into election mode and make the leadership more effective at the grassroots level. Through this exercise, the party is giving full opportunity to the emergence of new and professional leadership by making large-scale changes in its existing organizational structure.
