Troy Parrott celebrated his Champions League debut by scoring the decisive goal as Real Betis beat 10-man Lille 3-2.

The Republic of Ireland forward, who joined the Spanish club this summer from Dutch side AZ, completed his team’s comeback in the 54th minute when he drove a low left-footed shot beyond the goalkeeper and into the corner.

It came only four days after Parrott struck an 81st-minute winner for Real Betis in a 1-0 win over Real Madrid in Seville, having come off the bench just 15 minutes earlier.

French club Lille went ahead in the 12th minute and then restored their lead through Alexsandro in the 37th minute, with Marc Bartra scoring twice in between for Betis.

Lille ended the match with 10 men after Ethan Mbappe, the brother of Kylian, was sent off for catching an opponent in the face with his elbow.

Kylian Mbappe, meanwhile, also got on the scoresheet as Real Madrid edged past Inter Milan in their Champions League opener, and Jose Mourinho marked his return to the competition at the Bernabeu with a win over one of his former clubs.

The visitors had most of the ball in the first half, but it was Real Madrid who struck twice from their opening two efforts on target. A careless pass from Curtis Jones left centre-back Yann Bisseck in difficulty, and Mbappe scored his first goal of this season’s Champions League campaign after a sharp pass from Brahim Diaz.

If the first goal could have been avoided from Inter’s point of view, the second made for painful viewing. Goalkeeper Josep Martinez attempted a backheel inside his own six-yard box while Federico Valverde, the Real Madrid captain, closed him down, and the relentless midfielder poked the ball over the line as he made the challenge.

Both teams created plenty of opportunities after the interval as the contest opened up more and more. Martinez made up for his earlier mistake by denying Jude Bellingham, but Thibaut Courtois was also forced into action on several occasions.

Inter eventually pulled one back when Carlos Augusto converted Lautaro Martinez’s low cross, but Real Madrid held firm to give Mourinho his first Champions League victory since returning to the Bernabeu for his second spell, more than 13 years after the last one.
