Health Desk. Cervical cancer is one of the major cancers occurring in women. Many times no obvious symptoms are visible in its beginning, hence regular checkups are considered very important. When symptoms appear, some unusual changes may be seen in the body.

1. Bleeding between periods

Sudden bleeding between periods, more bleeding than usual, or bleeding after periods have ended can be a warning sign.

2. Bleeding after intercourse

If there is frequent bleeding during or after physical intercourse, it should not be ignored. There can be many other reasons for this, but examination by a doctor is necessary.

3. Abnormal vaginal discharge

Discharge from the vagina that is different from normal, in large quantities or of a changed nature is also a sign worth noting. Medical advice should be sought if there is bleeding or abnormal changes in the discharge.

4. Pain in lower abdomen or waist

Persistent pain in the pelvis i.e. lower abdomen, waist or between the hips can also be a reason for examination. Especially when other symptoms mentioned above are also present along with it.

Why is timely testing important?

Screening is important because cervical cancer does not show symptoms in its early stages. HPV testing and Pap tests can help detect changes in the cervix that may be precancerous.
