Bengaluru, September 9 (IANS). Karnataka Science and Technology Minister Ajay Dharam Singh has sought cooperation from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in organizing direct interaction programs between students and scientists at science centers in the state. The aim of this initiative is to make the study of science practical and experience based instead of limiting it to books.
The minister made this proposal during his meeting with ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan. He said that through such programmes, students will be able to get information directly from ISRO scientists about space science, research, satellite technology and career prospects in the field of science and technology.
Ajay Dharam Singh said that when students get the opportunity to interact directly with scientists, science is no longer just a textbook subject but appears as an opportunity for the future. The experiences and achievements of ISRO scientists instill curiosity, research mindset and inspiration to achieve bigger goals in the students.
He informed that the state government is expanding science centres, mobile digital planetarium and telescope based learning programs to popularize science among students.
According to the Minister, the Mobile Digital Planetarium program of the Department of Science and Technology has so far reached 3,282 schools in the state and more than 5.46 lakh students and teachers have benefited from it.
Additionally, under the Providing Access to Telescopes (PAT) programme, telescopes have been provided to schools and colleges of Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions and training to science teachers has also been provided.
He said the next step is to start ISRO scientist-student interaction programs in science centres, to make space science and technology more interesting and accessible to students.
The Minister said that science should not only be taught, but also shown, explained and experienced through questions. Direct interaction with scientists will strengthen the scientific temper among students and help in creating a new generation of future scientists, researchers and technocrats.
He said that with the support of ISRO, the state government wants to extend these interaction programs to all the science centers of Karnataka, so that students from cities as well as districts and taluks can directly connect with the scientists.
