KOLKATA: West Bengal leader Suvendu Adhikari led a massive rally in south Kolkata on Wednesday. The gates of Jadhavpur University were closed during the walk of the Chief Minister. An enraged Suvendu Adhikari said, “I have taken an oath to uproot Jadhavpur University, the center of excellence and the land of Rishi Aurobindo, demands Kashmir Azadi gangs, those who give red salutes to Kishanji and those who write ‘Bhagava Tandav’. You know I took an oath in 2011 to eliminate communists.
He said that those raising slogans like “Kashmir wants freedom” in the Jadhavpur University campus would be uprooted. The purpose of the rally was to preserve the “pride” of saffron. Chanting “Jai Shri Ram”, a large number of saints and sages took part in the “Kesario Samman March”. The march started from Goalpark and ended at 8B bus stand outside Jadavpur University campus. Dressed in saffron and carrying a saffron flag, the officer led a 3-km-long rally, which was also attended by hundreds of BJP supporters. Addressing the crowd outside the campus, he said, “We will uproot the forces raising slogans of ‘Kashmir demands freedom’ in the Jadhavpur University campus.” The march comes amid an ongoing political and ideological war at Jadhavpur University, where clashes, graffiti and sloganeering between leftist student groups and the RSS-affiliated ABVP have intensified in recent days.
A BJP leader said the rally was organized to “protect the dignity of saffron” and oppose “attempts to defame it”. He said that the purpose of the march was to spread awareness about the values, ideals and dignity associated with the color saffron. The march came less than two weeks after the officer attended an event outside the campus where around 10,000 people sang the full version of ‘Vande Mataram’.
