The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) on Monday approved defense procurement proposals worth about Rs 1.10 lakh crore for the Indian Armed Forces. According to the Defense Ministry, these proposals have included the different needs of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.
Defense Acquisition Council: India has taken another important step towards promoting self-reliance in the defense sector. The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) on Monday, September 7, approved defense procurement proposals worth about Rs 1.10 lakh crore. Under these proposals, various operational and strategic needs of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force will be met. The special thing is that about 98 percent of the approved proposals are planned to be purchased from Indian industries.
According to the Defense Ministry, these defense procurement proposals are aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the three services and promoting indigenous defense production. This is expected to strengthen the country’s defense supply chain along with large-scale orders for the Indian defense industry.
DAC meeting chaired by Rajnath Singh
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh chaired the Defense Acquisition Council meeting on September 7. The meeting considered proposals to various defense systems and equipment keeping in mind the current and future requirements of the armed forces. DAC is the principal decision making body on important matters to defense procurement. After the approvals of the Council, the respective defense procurement processes proceed as per the prescribed rules and further approvals.
Many important equipment approved for Indian Army
According to the information given by the Defense Ministry, the purchase of many important equipment and systems for the Indian Army has been approved. These include Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) reconnaissance vehicles. These vehicles will be useful in identifying potential CBRN threats and strengthening the capability of military operations in situations.
Apart from this, proposals to high mobility vehicles, self-propelled mechanical mine layers and advanced light helicopters for the army have also been approved. These systems can be used to improve the mobility, operational capability and deployment of military forces in different areas.
Emphasis on bridging systems and other military capabilities
The DAC has also approved proposals to trawl tanks and omnibus bridge systems for the Army. Such equipment can play an important role during troop movements and operations in difficult geographical conditions. Devices such as omnidirectional bridge systems are particularly useful in situations where military vehicles and equipment must move across rivers, streams or other obstacles. At the same time, other approved systems can help strengthen the army’s engineering and logistics capabilities.
Importance of 98% procurement from Indian industries
The most important aspect of this decision is that it has come to light that about 98 percent of defense purchases are made from Indian industries. This is considered important in terms of India’s policy of increasing its defense production capacity and self-reliance. Large scale purchase of defense equipment from domestic companies can encourage indigenous manufacturing. Besides, it is also likely to boost the expansion of technical capability, production base and supply chain in the defense sector.
