Automobile Desk: These days, there is a huge demand for the compact SUV segment in the country's car market. It has become clear from the sales report of August 2026 that the first choice of Indian customers has now become powerful SUV vehicles of small size and fitting in the budget. The biggest change has been seen in the market figures this time, where Tata Motors' most affordable SUV Tata Punch has defeated all the other vehicles in the segment on the basis of its strong mileage, modern features and attractive price.
During the month of August, Tata Punch broke all previous sales records and achieved the first position. If we look at the figures, a total of 21,320 units of Punch hit the Indian roads during this period. Last year i.e. in August 2025, this number was only 10,704 units. This simply means that within just one year the demand for this car has almost doubled. Registering an annual growth of about 99.2 percent, Punch has taken its market share in the compact SUV segment to 17.6 percent.

There was a tough competition between Maruti Suzuki and Tata vehicles for the second and third positions. Maruti's Ford took the second position with sales of 18,730 units. There has been an increase of 50.8 percent in the sales of Franks as compared to last year. At the same time, Tata Nexon remained at third position, lagging behind by a margin of only 299 units. Nexon sold 18,431 units in August, registering a growth of 31.6 percent as compared to 14,004 units last year. The segment share continues to be dominated by the Franxx at 15.4 per cent and the Nexon at 15.2 per cent.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza, which has traditionally been in a strong position, slipped to fourth place this time with sales of 15,288 units. However, after coming in the new avatar, Brezza has also registered a growth of 12.2 percent and its total market share was 12.6 percent. At fifth place was Hyundai's popular car Venue, whose 11,365 units were sold. Venue has achieved a good growth of 40.2 percent as compared to last year's 8,109 units.
There was direct competition between the companies even from sixth to tenth position. Kia Sonet stood at sixth position with 9,048 units (up 16.9%) and Mahindra's XUV 3XO stood at seventh position with 8,302 units (up 50.4%). Hyundai Exeter also performed well by selling 8,157 units and registering a strong annual growth of 61.2 percent. It was just 145 units behind the XUV 3XO. At the bottom of the list, Skoda Kaylak stood at ninth position with sales of 3,590 units and Toyota Tirace at tenth position with sales of 2,863 units.
