Agentic AI Engineers Become the Fastest-Growing AI Role

Demand for Agentic AI engineers in India has surged 260% year-on-year in 2026as enterprises move artificial intelligence beyond experimentation and begin integrating AI into real business workflows.

The figure comes from a report by HR solutions provider SKY HRwhich tracked emerging technology roles and skills using a large labour-market intelligence database.

Agentic AI engineers recorded the highest growth among the emerging roles analysed, signalling a shift from AI systems that simply generate responses towards systems capable of taking actions and completing tasks with greater autonomy.

Other AI Roles Are Also Growing

The demand increase is not limited to agentic AI.

GenAI solutions architects and AI product owners both recorded 120% growth during the period. Demand for LLM engineers rose 86.5%while MLOps engineers saw an 82.2% increase.

These roles reflect the growing need for professionals who can build AI systems, integrate them into existing enterprise environments and manage them once they move into production.

The report’s analysis covered more than 450 million job postings, 30 million professional profiles and over 10,000 mapped skillswith data spanning March 2024 to May 2026.

AI Is Already Handling Routine Workloads

The growing demand for advanced AI talent comes as AI itself begins taking over portions of routine technology work.

According to the report, AI can handle up to 70% of workloads involved in ticket resolution and report generation and around 65% of test-case creation.

This places IT support, reporting and manual quality assurance among the areas with significant potential for task-level automation.

However, the report does not suggest that these functions can be completely automated. Human involvement remains necessary for the remaining work, particularly where judgement, oversight and complex problem-solving are required.

Companies Are Turning to Reskilling

The changing skills landscape is forcing technology companies to reconsider how they build their workforce.

IT services organisations are expanding AI-focused training and reskilling programmes, including cloud academies, hyperscaler certifications, enterprise AI initiatives and structured programmes for early-career employees.

The objective is increasingly to move existing employees into roles aligned with emerging demand rather than relying entirely on external hiring.

AI, Cloud and Cybersecurity Skills Face Gaps

The report identified AI, cloud and cybersecurity as key areas where companies are looking to strengthen capabilities.

Market-level skill gaps across these areas range from 38% to 61%highlighting the difficulty employers face in finding people with the right combination of technical knowledge and practical experience.

As AI adoption accelerates, professionals who can build, deploy, integrate and govern these systems are likely to become increasingly valuable.

The Workforce Is Entering a Transition

The rise in agentic AI hiring does not simply represent another technology hiring cycle. It points to a broader change in how technology work is organised.

Routine tasks are increasingly being delegated to AI, while human employees are expected to focus more on designing systems, managing AI-driven workflows, solving complex problems and ensuring that automated systems operate reliably.

For employers, this makes reskilling and internal talent development as important as recruitment.
