Students of Sundarnagar Government Polytechnic in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh have come up with a unique experiment in the field of fire fighting. Final year electrical engineering students have developed an 'automatic sonic fire extinguisher' that extinguishes fires with the help of sound waves. Interestingly, this device does not require water, foam or chemical fire extinguishers.

The main objective of this student project is to reduce the loss of electrical equipment during fire fighting. Water or chemicals in common fire extinguishers can damage servers, electronic circuits, and expensive equipment. Sonic technology, however, leaves no chemical residue behind after extinguishing the fire.

Sensors, microcontroller, digital logic controller and high-power amplifier are used in this device. After detecting fire with the help of sensors, the system generates specific low frequency sound waves. The students' prototype used sound waves between 30 and 60 Hz.

These waves affect the movement of oxygen around the fire by creating vibrations in the air. This reduces the oxygen supply required by the flames and helps extinguish the fire. In short, the concept behind this is to create a kind of 'wall of air' around the fire through sound waves.

The price of the device is currently said to be around ₹7,000 to ₹8,000. Due to its light weight, it can be carried even in remote areas. In the future, the students intend to use it for data centers, server rooms, laboratories as well as forest fires.

It is currently a prototype and work is underway to make it more compact and powerful. The project is also being prepared to get a patent. Efforts are underway to take this student experiment beyond a college project and turn it into a commercial product.
