Failed many times
Born Jack Ma in 1964 in Hangzhou, China, his birth name is Ma Yun. He faced many difficulties in his early education. He failed several times in primary and secondary school examinations. He took the National College Entrance Examination twice and passed it on the third attempt, then graduated from Hangzhou Normal University in 1988 with a degree in English. After this he started his next journey.
30 jobs also rejected
After graduation, Jack Ma applied for about 30 different jobs and was rejected everywhere. He was the only one among 24 other applicants to apply for a job at a local KFC. Before discovering the Internet during a trip to America in 1995, he worked as an English teacher and earned just $12 a month, roughly ₹1,143 today.
Then a new beginning
In 1999, Jack Ma gathered 17 friends and former students in his small apartment in Hangzhou to launch Alibaba, a business-to-business marketplace. For this he persuaded all of them to contribute approximately $60,000. Despite not having a technical background, Jack Ma's vision and leadership helped small and medium-sized businesses in China to trade globally.
Who funded Alibaba?
Alibaba received substantial funding early on. That included $25 million from SoftBank and Goldman Sachs. This paved the way for major expansion in consumer retail Taobao, Tmall and digital payments (Alipay). Then, in September 2014, Alibaba made history with a record-breaking $21.8 billion IPO on the New York Stock Exchange. This brought Jack Ma international recognition and made him one of the richest men in Asia.
A long way from the lamellae and back again
After stepping down as CEO in 2013 and Executive Chairman in 2019, Jack Ma focused on social service, education and the emerging technology ecosystem. After regulatory pressures and a major restructuring of his financial venture Ant Group in late 2020, Jack Ma stayed out of the limelight for a few years and slowly re-emerged in the public eye.
