Petrol and Diesel Prices Today: On September 11, crude oil prices in the international market are witnessing a significant surge once again. Brent crude has crossed the $108-per-barrel mark due to escalating attacks on key trade routes in the Middle East—particularly maritime trade—and potential supply disruptions. According to a Reuters report, for the first time in nearly four months, both major global benchmarks are on track to end the week above $100.

However, there is some relief: despite this sharp rise in international crude oil prices, petrol and diesel prices in the Indian market remain stable today. The country's state-owned oil marketing companies release new rates for petrol and diesel daily at 6 AM.

First, understand the reason behind the surge in crude oil prices:

According to Reuters data, Brent crude futures have risen by $1.05 (or 1%) to reach $108.68 per barrel. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude is trading at $103.45 per barrel, up by 95 cents (or 1%). Every week, both benchmarks have recorded a robust gain of approximately 13%—the largest weekly rise since July 17.

Rising tensions in the Middle East have increased threats to Red Sea shipping routes. Fears of regional oil supply disruptions have intensified due to Houthi rebels controlling Yemen's port of Mocha and an escalation in attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Attacks launched from Yemen on Saudi energy facilities have further heightened tensions, driving up crude oil prices in the global market.

Factors determining petrol and diesel prices in India

Several factors influence the retail prices of petrol and diesel in India. The first is the international price of crude oil. Petrol and diesel are produced from crude oil. When crude oil prices rise in international benchmarks, the costs for oil refineries increase. The value of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar also plays a role; India imports the majority of its crude oil requirements from abroad, with payments made in US Dollars. If the Rupee weakens against the Dollar, importing crude oil becomes more expensive.

The retail price of petrol and diesel includes Central Government excise duty and State Government VAT, resulting in varying rates across different states. The final price also incorporates refining costs—to convert crude oil into petrol and diesel—and freight charges for transporting the fuel to petrol pumps nationwide. Market dynamics, specifically the balance between fuel consumption and supply, also influence prices. Additionally, fluctuations in demand during festivals or seasonal changes impact pricing.
