But the similarities mostly end there. Apple is pushing the iPhone 18 Pro Max harder towards creators this year with variable aperture, more manual camera controls, a stronger video toolkit, and the new A20 Pro chip. Samsung continues to focus on versatility with the S Pen, longer camera zoom, Privacy Display, Galaxy AI, and a noticeably lighter design.

There is also a sizeable price difference. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at Rs 1,79,900 in India, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra starts at Rs 1,39,999. That makes Samsung Rs 39,901 cheaper before any offers are taken into account.

Both are very large phones, but Samsung has done a better job of making that size easier to live with. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is 35g lighter and noticeably thinner than the iPhone, which is something you are likely to notice during extended one-handed use.

Samsung also manages to fit an S Pen into the body. It remains useful for handwritten notes, photo editing, signing documents, and more precise interactions with the display. The iPhone 18 Pro Max still feels suitably premium, but at 249g, it is undeniably a heavy phone.

You are getting a flagship-grade display either way. Both offer adaptive high-refresh-rate panels with plenty of sharpness and smoothness.

Apple has made the Dynamic Island smaller this year, and it can now display up to three Live Activities at once. Samsung's more unusual addition is Privacy Display, which limits what people beside you can see without requiring a privacy screen protector.

Samsung even lets you apply Privacy Display selectively to things such as notifications, specific apps, PIN entry, and passwords, making it more than just a gimmick if you frequently use your phone in public.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max runs on Apple's new A20 Pro, built using a 2nm process. It has a seven-core GPU, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine with 32 cores in total, and 50% more memory bandwidth compared with the A19 Pro.

Apple has also redesigned the thermal system with a larger vapor chamber and new chip packaging designed to improve sustained performance during demanding tasks such as gaming and video exports.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and comes with up to 16GB RAM. It is an extremely powerful combination in its own right, particularly for gaming, multitasking, and Galaxy AI features.

Both should be exceptionally fast in day-to-day use, but Apple's A20 Pro and redesigned cooling make the iPhone particularly compelling if sustained performance is one of your priorities.

This is where the two phones take very different approaches. Samsung gives you a more versatile zoom setup with dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras, along with 10x optical-quality zoom. If you frequently photograph subjects from far away, the Galaxy S26 Ultra gives you more flexibility.

Apple's big upgrade is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. Users can manually adjust aperture alongside shutter speed and white balance, giving creators considerably more control than before.

Video remains another major strength for Apple. The iPhone 18 Pro Max supports features such as ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2, making it particularly attractive for creators who actually use their phone as part of a professional video workflow.

For photography and especially zoom, Samsung has the more versatile setup. If video production and manual camera controls matter more, the iPhone makes the stronger case.

Apple doesn't disclose the battery capacity of the iPhone 18 Pro Max, but rates the India model for up to 43 hours of video playback. That's a strong claim and one of the biggest battery improvements Apple has made to its Pro Max lineup.

Samsung uses a 5,000mAh battery and supports 60W wired charging, with the company claiming up to 75% charge in around 30 minutes. Apple, meanwhile, says the iPhone can reach 50% in around 15 minutes with a compatible charger.

Since the two companies use different battery testing methods, real-world testing will ultimately tell us more than manufacturer claims. Still, Apple appears to have made battery endurance a major focus this generation, while Samsung continues to offer very quick top-ups.

Software is ultimately an iOS versus Android decision. If you already use a MacBook, Apple Watch, AirPods, or other Apple products, the iPhone's ecosystem remains a major advantage. Samsung offers more flexibility through features such as DeX, deeper multitasking, S Pen integration, and Galaxy AI. But the ecosystem also comes in here if you have already invested in Galaxy Buds, Watch and Galaxy Book.

Samsung also promises seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, giving buyers plenty of confidence if they intend to keep the phone for a long time.

The bigger issue for Apple is price. The iPhone 18 Pro Max costs Rs 39,901 more than the Galaxy S26 Ultra at their respective starting prices, despite both starting with 256GB storage.

Verdict: Which One Should You Buy?

If I were choosing between these two purely on hardware and value in India, I would buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max absolutely has its advantages. The A20 Pro looks like the more compelling performance package, Apple's battery claims are excellent, and the combination of variable aperture, manual camera controls, ProRes RAW, and Apple Log 2 makes it the phone I would pick if mobile video production were one of my main priorities.

But Samsung simply gives you more hardware for less money. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is lighter and thinner, offers much more flexible zoom hardware, includes an S Pen, gets the clever Privacy Display, comes with up to 16GB RAM.

And it does all of that while costing almost Rs 40,000 less.

So, if you already prefer iOS, are heavily invested in Apple's ecosystem, or regularly use your phone for professional video work, the iPhone 18 Pro Max remains an excellent choice. But for most buyers comparing the two on hardware, features, and value alone, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the easier flagship to recommend.
