New Delhi, September 11 (IANS). Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has defended the importance of BRICS summit. He said that this group provides an important platform for the 'Global South' and showcases India's diplomatic strength. This statement of Tharoor has come when senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram had raised questions on the concrete benefits India got from this group.

Speaking before the BRICS summit, Tharoor said that this group of 11 countries represents a large part of the world's population and global economy, NDTV reported.

“There are over 100 countries in the Global South, but here we have 11 important countries in the Global South, which together represent the greatest diversity of thought,” Tharoor said.

He said that BRICS countries represent most of the world's population and 41 percent of global GDP. The rest of the world should take this group very seriously.

Tharoor said that it is an honor for India to host the summit. The participation of Heads of State and Government of Member and Observer countries shows that India has the potential to bring together major global players.

He said, “It shows a special kind of diplomatic 'convening power' (the ability to bring people together), which has its own importance on the global stage.”

These statements of Tharoor came when Chidambaram raised questions on the concrete economic and strategic benefits India got from joining BRICS.

The two-day 18th BRICS summit will begin on September 12. This conference will include 11 major countries with emerging and developing economies, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, India, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and UAE. The theme of India's chairmanship in 2026 is 'Building for Strength, Innovation, Cooperation and Stability'.

Organized by the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute (SWFI), the objective of this program is to create a direct platform through which sovereign capital (government investment funds) can be linked to such projects to infrastructure, energy and digital capacity in the 21 member countries of BRICS and associate countries in which it is profitable to invest.
