Health Desk. Kidney stones are a common problem, but if not taken care of on time, pain and problems to urination can increase. When stones are present, the body gives some signals, which are important to recognize. However, there can be other reasons for these symptoms, so it is important to get checked by a doctor if necessary.

1. Severe pain in the waist or abdomen

The most common symptom of kidney stones is sudden, severe pain. This pain can start from one side of the waist and can be felt till the lower part of the abdomen or near the thigh. The pain can sometimes be mild and sometimes very severe.

2. Burning sensation while urinating

Due to stones, burning or pain may be felt during urination. Some people may also feel the urge to urinate frequently.

3. Blood in urine

If the color of urine appears pink, red or brown, it should not be ignored. Scratches in the urinary tract caused by kidney stones can cause blood in the urine.

4. Changes in urination

Cloudy color of urine, strong odor or less amount of urine than normal can also be a sign of trouble. However, such changes can also be seen in other problems like infection.

5. Nausea and vomiting

Along with severe pain during kidney stones, some people may also complain of nausea or vomiting. This can especially happen if a stone blocks the urinary tract.

When to consult a doctor immediately?

If severe pain is accompanied by fever, chills, persistent vomiting, urinary retention or excessive blood in the urine, seek medical help immediately. To confirm kidney stones, the doctor may recommend urine tests, blood tests or other imaging tests as needed.
