The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is incomplete without Modak. It is believed that Ganapati is not satisfied if he does not get Modak. From the traditional coconut-molasses modak to the modern versions of chocolate or dry fruits—you can make this festival at home. Here are three simple recipes.
Dry Fruits and Dates Modak
Ingredients:
- Dates without seeds – 1 cup (crushed)
- Bazarchalati Big Sweet Figs – Half cup (crushed)
- Almonds – half a cup
- Walnuts – half a cup
- Pistachios – half a cup
- Ghee – 1 teaspoon
- Cardamom powder – half teaspoon
Method:
First, crush the dates and figs well, or grind them in a mixer. Lightly roast the almonds until dry. Then break it into Hammandista. Don't be too refined.
Now heat ghee in a pan and add the mixture of dates and figs and keep stirring till it becomes soft. Mix the broken almonds and cardamom powder well.
Grease the modak mold with little ghee and press it well. Dry fruits and dates are made by opening the mold.
Coconut-Jaggery Steamed Modak
Ingredients:
- Rice powder – 1 cup
- Water – 1 cup
- Ghee – 1 teaspoon
- Salt – a pinch
- Korano coconut – 1 cup
- Jaggery – half a cup
- Cardamom powder – half teaspoon
- Poppy seeds – 1 tbsp (optional)
Method:
Boil water, ghee and a pinch of salt in a pot. Now slowly stir the rice powder with your hands. Care must be taken to prevent the dela from rotting. After boiling covered for a while, take it down. Do not let it cool completely, knead it while it is still warm to form a soft dough.
To make the pura, melt jaggery in a pan and add grated coconut, poppy seeds and cardamom powder. Turn off the heat when the mixture becomes slightly sticky.
Cut small pieces of lychee from the rice husk and shape them into cups in your hand. Fill it with coconut-molasses filling and fold the edges to form a modak. Now steam it for about 10 minutes. Modak mold can also be used for this purpose.
Chocolate candy
Ingredients:
- Dark or milk chocolate – 200 grams
- Mary Biscuits – 1 cup
- Dry roasted nuts (cashews, almonds, pistachios) – half a cup
- Condensed milk – 2 tbsp

Method:
Melt the chocolate. Mix crushed biscuits, roasted almonds and condensed milk in it.
Grease the modak mold with little ghee and fill the chocolate mixture and press it well. Remove from the mold and refrigerate the cookies for about an hour to set well.
