Sangrur: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of misleading the family of Gulzar Singh by claiming that it had offered a government job to one of his family members, alleging that no actual appointment letter was issued.
Gulzar Singh, a 47-year-old labourer from Toor Banjara village in Sangrur, had publicly questioned Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema about the drug problem during an event in Dirbha. He later allegedly consumed poison and recorded a video statement before his death.
After meeting the bereaved family in Sangrur, Warring claimed that the administration had provided only a 'recommendation' letter, suggesting that one family member be given a government job, rather than making a formal job offer.
He alleged that before Gulzar Singh's cremation, the family was led to believe that the document was an actual job letter.
Warring further alleged that Gulzar Singh was driven to suicide after being threatened and humiliated by people associated with Cheema. The allegations have not been independently established.
The Punjab Congress demanded that Cheema be removed as finance minister and arrested on charges of abetment to suicide, saying the government must take action in the case.
Rejecting allegations that the Congress was politicising the matter, Warring said the party had a responsibility to stand with the bereaved family. He said Gulzar Singh, whose son was reportedly struggling with drug addiction, had mentioned the minister in his purported dying statement.
Warring said Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress workers were standing with the family and that party workers held protests across Punjab on Friday demanding justice.
