Former Big Bang member and controversial K-pop star Seungri has denied an aggravated assault allegation after a man in his 30s filed a complaint against him.

The former singer, whose real name is Lee Seung-hyun, admitted that he held a liquor bottle during a dispute but strongly denied swinging it at the man or using it to threaten him.

Police reportedly received a complaint on August 26 accusing Seungri of aggravated assault. Authorities are now looking into the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident and may question those involved as part of their investigation.

The allegation comes years after Seungri left Big Bang and the entertainment industry following his involvement in the Burning Sun scandal, which became one of the biggest controversies to hit the South Korean entertainment industry.

What led to Seungri’s assault allegation?

According to Seungri’s account, the incident took place at a restaurant in Gangnam, Seoul, where he was having a meal with two acquaintances.

An intoxicated man allegedly approached the group several times and asked if he could join them. Seungri said the man continued making the request despite being told that he could not join the group.

The situation eventually turned into an argument. During the dispute, Seungri acknowledged that he picked up a liquor bottle while telling the man that he did not want him to sit with them.

However, he insisted that he never swung the bottle at the man and did not threaten him with it.

Seungri also claimed that the situation later became less tense. According to him, he and the man eventually drank together, exchanged contact information and left on friendly terms.

The former K-pop star further claimed that the man contacted him several hours after the incident. In the message, the man allegedly said that he would bring a business proposal to Seungri the following week.

Seungri has maintained that these details support his version of events and contradict the assault allegation.

He also said that he has obtained surveillance footage and witness accounts connected to the incident. The former singer stated that he is prepared to cooperate with the police if he is called for questioning.

At the same time, Seungri is reportedly considering filing a countercomplaint over the allegations.

What happened to Seungri?

The latest allegation comes years after Seungri’s career was dramatically affected by the Burning Sun scandal.

Seungri left Big Bang and announced his retirement from the entertainment industry in 2019 as the scandal continued to grow. The controversy involved several allegations and investigations that attracted widespread attention in South Korea and internationally.

Following the scandal, Seungri was indicted on nine charges. The charges included arranging prostitution, prostitution, violations to sexual crimes, habitual gambling, embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes and instigating special assault.

After a lengthy legal process, South Korea’s Supreme Court finalised his prison sentence at one year and six months.

Seungri was released from prison in February 2023 after completing his sentence.

Since his release, the former Big Bang member has remained a controversial figure. His latest legal dispute has once again placed his name in the spotlight.

Police are continuing to examine the recent complaint, and further developments will depend on the findings of the investigation. For now, Seungri has denied the aggravated assault allegation and maintains that he did not threaten or attack the man involved in the dispute.
