Manchester United have marked their return to Europe’s top club competition in emphatic fashion, brushing aside Azerbaijani outfit Sabah in a thoroughly one-sided contest at Old Trafford. The convincing 4-0 result not only earned valuable points in the league phase, but also formally brought to an end the club’s painful 1,016-day wait for a UEFA Champions League goal.

Cunha made the most of an accurate delivery from Patrick Dorgu and hammered a close-range effort into the top-left corner. That vital goal changed the mood entirely and allowed Manchester United to seize full command of the game.

Bruno Fernandes made it 2-0 just before half-time, drilling a precise effort into the middle of the net after a sharp pass from Youri Tielemans. Soon after, Benjamin Sesko struck the third on the stroke of the interval, effectively ensuring the contest was over before the break.

United kept up the intensity after the restart, giving the visitors from Azerbaijan no opportunity to settle or recover. Their back line stayed firm throughout, while the forward players continued to manufacture several chances to increase the margin.

Lisandro Martinez then added the fourth and final goal in the 68th minute, finishing off a well-rehearsed set-piece move with a left-footed strike into the bottom-right corner. The emphatic 4-0 win at Old Trafford lifted United into fourth place in the overall Champions League standings. They are currently behind only Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, separated solely by goal difference after an outstanding and highly promising start.

After this impressive return to European action, Manchester United now have to turn their attention to Sunday’s major Manchester derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford. United are currently 11th in the table with four points from their first three matches. City, by contrast, come into the game with a flawless record of three wins and sit at the top.
