Tottenham Hotspur have secured the long-term future of Swedish talent Lucas Bergvall, with the midfielder signing a new contract in North London. The 20-year-old’s extension marks a major turnaround in his Spurs journey, arriving only months after he had indicated he wanted to leave the club during a spell of intense transfer speculation.

A dramatic U-turn in North London

Bergvall has now brought the uncertainty over his future to an end by agreeing a new deal at Tottenham Hotspur, in what comes as a significant lift for Roberto De Zerbi’s project. Just three months ago, the Sweden international had told the club he wanted to pursue a transfer after a difficult period at the end of last season, when his game time had been heavily restricted.

Looking back on his choice to stay and the direction the club is moving in under De Zerbi, Bergvall spoke positively about the current set-up in an interview with the club’s official website. “I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract. I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that,” Bergvall said.

Ignoring the Premier League vultures

The road to this renewal was far from simple, with a number of top-flight clubs trying to take advantage of Bergvall’s earlier uncertainty. Nottingham Forest had a sizeable £38m offer turned down by Tottenham during the summer window, while Aston Villa and Chelsea were both keeping a close watch on developments.

Bergvall is now clearly intent on making a real impact on the pitch after managing only 45 minutes in the Premier League so far this season. The midfielder is eager to repay the faith shown in him by the club, saying: “Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team - performances, goals and assists - to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

De Zerbi sets the standard

This contract renewal follows a tough-love phase under De Zerbi, who spent the summer warning his players about commitment and making it clear that he would not force anyone to remain at the club. Turning that situation around and securing the 20-year-old’s future represents a huge boost for Tottenham. Despite still being young, Bergvall has already made 80 appearances for Spurs in all competitions and won 14 caps for Sweden, with a historic campaign at this summer’s World Cup standing out as a highlight.

However, the relationship between manager and player appears to have been repaired after a chaotic finish to the previous campaign, when Spurs narrowly escaped relegation - a tense spell during which De Zerbi admitted he had made some mistakes in the way he handled the Swede. Speaking after the new deal was completed, the Italian coach praised the midfielder highly and underlined his long-term value to the project.

“Every day in training you can see Lucas’ desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level,” De Zerbi said. “Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments. He also understands that development is a process and he has shown a fantastic attitude towards working on the areas of his game where he can become even better. I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”

Mixed start to the season for Bergvall

Bergvall played in Tottenham’s first two matches of the campaign, starting the 3-0 Premier League loss to Brentford and the 5-1 Carabao Cup win over Charlton Athletic. But after a first-half mistake against Brentford led to a goal from Vitaly Janelt, the midfielder was taken off at half-time and has since been an unused substitute in Spurs’ following league games against Newcastle and Forest.

The Swedish midfielder had originally arrived in North London from Djurgarden in the summer of 2024. His swift development had already earned him a contract extension in April 2025, tying him to the club until 2031, before this latest commitment to Spurs.
