Mumbai : A 25-year-old woman from Jalgaon, Maharashtra, had been experiencing a “whooshing” sound in her ears that coincided with heartbeats for more than five years. This female patient had a continuous whooshing sound that coincided with the heartbeat. Over the years, despite consulting many doctors and undergoing various tests and treatments, she had to suffer without permanent relief. Finally she decided to come to Mumbai and get treatment at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre. Neurologist at Jaslok Hospital Dr. Fali Poncha, Endovascular Neurosurgeon Dr. Sudhir Ambekar and Hematologist Dr. Sameer Shah's team conducted MRI and MRV examination of the patient. This was diagnosed as a narrowing of a major blood vessel in the brain ('venous sinus stenosis'), which disrupted blood flow and caused a rhythmic “whooshing” sound in the ears.

However, after proper diagnosis, the 'minimally invasive' process of inserting a catheter into the brain through the vein in the thigh and placing a stent in the brain immediately relieves the symptoms. Pulsatile tinnitus is a very rare condition in which the patient hears a “whooshing” or pounding sound in the ears in rhythm with the heartbeat. Although 14.4% of adults worldwide suffer from tinnitus, pulsatile tinnitus accounts for less than 10% of all cases. According to a study by Otology, only 0.09% of new patients are diagnosed with it; Also, since there is no separate definition of acute cases, clear statistics are still not available regarding its severity.
