Rajasthan Nagar Nikay Election: In the municipal elections of Rajasthan, Bharatiya Janata Party has taken lead over Congress and captured a large number of wards. In the results of 9,900 wards of the state, BJP has won 4,026 seats. Congress won in 3,438 wards; in many bodies, independents have established their presence as the largest faction, challenging both the major parties.

The results of city councils also showed a different picture in different areas. Congress has secured majority in 10 city councils. These include Jhalawar, Jhunjhunu, Karauli, Lalsot, Neem Ka Thana, Pratapgarh, Shahpura (Bhilwara), Sikar, Sirohi and Tonk.

Whereas in Dausa, Dholpur, Didwana, Gangapur City, Jalore, Khairthal, Kuchaman City and Shahpura (Jaipur), Congress has emerged as the largest party.

Independents dominate in 9 city councils

Apart from BJP and Congress, independent candidates have also performed strongly at many places. Independents have emerged as the largest faction in the municipal councils of Behror, Deeg, Fatehpur, Hanumangarh, Hindaun, Kotputli, Makrana, Nagaur and Tijara.

It is clear from this that in many places in the local body elections, voters have expressed trust in local faces instead of major political parties. Now the role of independents can be important for board formation in these bodies.

Who has the upper hand in big municipal corporations?

Even if we look at the results of municipal corporations, BJP appears to be in a strong position in many big cities. In Bhilwara, the party has achieved a clear majority by winning 45 out of all 70 wards. Congress has got 10 seats and independents have got 15 seats.

BJP also registered a big victory in Udaipur. Of the 80 wards, 53 went to the party, while Congress got 23, Independents 3 and CPI(M) one seat.

The results of all 65 wards of Alwar have also been declared. Here BJP won 28 seats, Congress 23, Independents 13 and BSP won one seat.

Congress has turned the tables and won majority in Bikaner. The party has got 42 wards out of 80. BJP stood second with 27 seats, while independents won 10 and RLP one ward.

Congress has become the largest party in Ajmer also. Here Congress has got 37 seats, BJP 32 and Independents have got 11 seats. Independents dominated in Bharatpur, where they won 38 out of 65 wards. BJP had to be satisfied with 20 seats and Congress with 7 seats. In Pali, Congress was ahead with 29 seats, while BJP won 21 and independents won 11 wards.

BJP touches majority mark in Jaipur, close contest in Jodhpur

BJP has won 69 seats in the 130 wards declared so far in the capital Jaipur Municipal Corporation. Congress has won 50 seats and independents have won 11 seats. Results of 20 out of total 150 wards are still pending, but BJP has already crossed the majority mark.

The contest in Jodhpur was very close. The results of 99 out of 100 wards have come. Both BJP and Congress have won 44 seats each, while 11 wards have gone to independents.

So far results of 83 wards have been revealed in Kota. Of these, BJP has won 50 seats, Congress 30 and Independents have won 3 seats. The results of 17 wards are still pending.

BJP took lead in Sawai Madhopur Municipal Council by winning 33 wards. Congress got 18 seats and independents got 9 seats. In Chomu Municipal Council, BJP won 30 wards, while Congress won 12 seats and Independents won 3 seats.

Elections were held in two phases

Voting for 309 municipal bodies of Rajasthan was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, voting was held in 162 bodies on September 9, while in the second phase, voting was held in 147 bodies on September 11.

A total of 10 municipal corporations, 51 municipal councils and 248 municipalities were involved in these elections. 76.41 percent voting was recorded in the first phase and 71.69 percent voting was recorded in the second phase. Including both the phases, the total voting percentage in the state was 74.05.

In the first phase, elections were held for 5,393 councilor posts of four municipal corporations including Alwar, Bharatpur, Bikaner and Bhilwara. More than 20 thousand candidates were in the fray in this phase.

In the second phase, elections were held in six municipal corporations including Jaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, Kota, Udaipur and Pali. In this phase, 18,266 candidates tried their luck for 4,774 wards.

These election results are also being linked to the functioning of the present BJP government in the state for about two and a half years. Before the elections, BJP had expressed hope of a big majority, while Congress was continuously claiming that the atmosphere was against the ruling party. The results now revealed have presented a new picture of the position of both the parties in local politics.
