Security has been tightened in the capital Delhi before the BRICS summit to be held on 12 and 13 September. Following the Intelligence Bureau (IB) alert, Delhi Police and Central Security agencies have increased surveillance in view of possible threats. Officials fear that some organizations or groups may try to obstruct the movement of VVIP leaders, intrude into security arrangements or influence the summit through agitation.

According to information received from intelligence agencies, there is a danger of writing objectionable or movement slogans on the walls, flying drones and trying to enter the VVIP route. For this reason, security has been increased at summit venues, big hotels, VVIP routes, important government offices and major transport hubs.

Security agencies are estimating possible threats keeping in mind the sensitive matters to different countries and their areas. According to sources, special caution is being taken regarding the Tibetan movement to China as well as matters to Russia. Security agencies fear that these issues can be used to create agitation or any kind of instability in Delhi.

Apart from this, the potential threat to Khalistan has also been included in the security assessment. Security agencies keep receiving emails and other information to this issue from time to time. Therefore, security agencies are also constantly keeping an eye on social media and digital communication platforms. Calls for agitation, attempts to mobilize people, inflammatory content as well as signals to possible vandalism or graffiti are also being monitored. Real-time coordination and exchange of information is going on between Delhi Police and Central Intelligence and Security agencies. Agencies have been kept on alert so that potential threats can be identified and stopped in time.

Special security rules will also be applicable in the airspace in and around Delhi during the BRICS Summit. According to sources, from 7 am on September 11 to 11 pm on September 13, there will be a special ban on regular take-off and landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport and other airports within a radius of 300 km from Delhi. However, certain categories of aircraft will be allowed to fly. These include passenger aircraft operating on regular schedules, special aircraft for foreign visitors associated with BRICS, aircraft of the Indian Air Force, Border Security Force (BSF) and Aviation Research Centre, military helicopters for emergency or medical purposes, state government aircraft and helicopters carrying the Governor or Chief Minister. Flight plans of special aircraft associated with BRICS will require prior approval from Air Traffic Control (ATC).

Regular passenger aircraft and overflights within a radius of 300 km from Delhi will be able to fly on their scheduled routes. However, special rules regarding height will apply to them. The climbing aircraft will have to reach an altitude of FL-290 i.e. about 29,000 feet by the time it comes within 200 km of Delhi. Similarly, landing aircraft will not be allowed to commence landing below FL-290 until they are 200 km or more from Delhi.

As part of security arrangements, Safdarjung Airport will remain closed. However, Indian Air Force helicopters deployed on emergency or VIP duty, as well as some BSF and Indian Air Force helicopters, will be allowed. These helicopters can also be used for the needs to National Security Group (NSG). Meanwhile, Rohini helipad will remain completely closed. For aircraft or helicopters which do not fall in the prescribed permission category, it will be necessary to obtain security clearance from the Union Home Ministry before flying.

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on 12 and 13 September. India is taking over the Presidency of BRICS for the fourth time in 2026. India has chosen the theme 'Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Building for Stability' for its Presidency. The summit will focus on development, stability, innovation and priorities of the Global South. Since big foreign leaders and delegations from different countries will be present in Delhi, the security forces in Delhi are on full alert to prevent possible protests, drone movement or security breach.
