Organic Eggs Recalled Due to Salmonella Outbreak—Over 20 Illnesses Reported

An active recall on eggs linked to a Salmonella outbreak was just announced, per a California Department of Public Health (CDPH) press release. The recall was initiated on September 8, with illnesses reported since June.

The eggs impacted by this recall are Happy Hens in-shell organic eggs sold in all grades and sizes across Southern California and the Central Coast in restaurants, grocery stores and farmers markets. The cartons contain an egg handler code of “CA-0677,” lot codes 223, 226 or 237, and sell-by dates from September 10 through 24.

Cartons of 12 eggs, 18-count cartons, 20-count flats, 30-count flats and 5-dozen cases (containing six flats of 30 eggs each) are all affected by this recall. Check your refrigerator, and if you have the recalled eggs on hand, dispose of them and contact your place of purchase for a potential refund.

As of September 11, there are 23 reported cases of Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) in California linked to this recall. Salmonellosis can cause symptoms of foodborne illness like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps and headaches within seven days after infection. Contact a healthcare provider immediately if you are displaying signs of infection after consuming the recalled eggs.
