Doing laundry is often not just about loading a washer. It is more about sorting clothes so certain items do not end up together in the same run.
Some people wash their inner garments on their own. Kids’ clothes can need a separate setting. Normal clothes, towels, and bigger home items may also call for different care. With a basic washer, that kind of sorting usually means more than one full cycle.
Xiaomi’s three-drum washer uses another plan. The Mijia District 3 Washing Machine, 14kg, does not rely on one shared drum. It has three separate washing areas: a 12kg main drum plus two smaller 1kg drums. The goal is straightforward. Different laundry types can be cleaned apart while the unit runs as one machine.
This three-drum idea is not brand new from Xiaomi. The firm has shown multi-zone washing units before. So the main point is not that there are three drums. The more important part is the layout, which may help make everyday family loads take less time to sort and wash.
What’s Special About A Three-Drum Washer?
Most washing machines use one big drum. If you want to wash underwear, kids’ clothes, and regular outfits separately, you usually do it in two ways. You wash them at different times, or you use different machines. With a three-drum setup, the routine looks different.
Xiaomi’s 14 kg model has:
- One 12 kg main drum
- Two smaller 1 kg drums
- Three separate wash areas
- Separate water paths
The big drum is meant for larger loads. The two small drums are for lighter items. That includes underwear and other delicate or personal clothes.
This matters because you do not have to mix everything in one load just because you only own one washer.
For a typical household, you might run the main drum for daily clothing. At the same time, the two smaller drums can be used for children’s clothes and small loads like underwear.
Why Separate Drum Machines Help
The key point is not how much laundry you can fit. It is about physical separation. On a standard one-drum washer, if you want two groups separated, you run two cycles. Even when each load is small, you still wait. You also spend more time starting and managing the rounds. With three separate zones, the washer can run different groups at the same time. Xiaomi’s setup uses three independent water paths. The goal is to stop wash water from mixing across the zones.
This setup can be handy for families with kids. You can load adult clothes into the main 12 kg drum. You can place kids’ clothing into a 1 kg drum. Underwear can go into the other 1 kg drum.
Now you do not have to finish one cycle before you begin the next. Each zone can work on its own schedule.
The same approach applies to other needs. You can split light from dark. You can group delicate items away from normal clothes. You can also keep smaller personal loads apart from bigger household loads. Sorting is still required. But it becomes easier. The machine gives you separate areas, so you do not have to rely on extra steps as much.
14 kg Total Capacity, With Three Drums
The box says it can hold 14 kg. Still, the number comes from how the drums are split up. One drum is rated for 12 kg. The other two drums are 1 kg each. Add them together, and you get the full 14 kg. That does not mean each drum can take a 14 kg load by itself.
The big drum is for thicker items and larger loads. Think bedding and bigger family washing.
The two small drums are meant for smaller amounts. This split is key. The point is not just having “more capacity.” It is the option to use the full total across different laundry types.
What The AI Feature Does
This model also adds automation tied to AI. Some write-ups on Xiaomi three-zone washers mention AI detergent dispensing. The idea is that it can estimate how much detergent to use, based on what is in the load. That way, you do not have to measure detergent for every wash.
There is also app control. The Mijia ecosystem lets users manage compatible appliances through the Xiaomi Home app. With that setup, the three-drum washer can fit into a smart home system for remote checks and wash program changes.
Even so, the AI claim should stay grounded. It does not mean the machine “knows” every item at home. It still needs user input for decisions. So the real value is routine help. It supports detergent dosing, washing program handling, and smart-home control.
Xiaomi’s Three Separate Water Circuit
A key detail is that the washer has three water loops. They help split the wash areas from each other. Xiaomi is not using the idea of three drums inside one shared tub.
The main aim is to cut down cross-contact between wash zones. That helps a lot when you mix laundry types in a single cycle. For example, you may clean personal items while other clothes, like regular family loads, run too.
If you wash underwear in one of the smaller drums, it will not need the same wash water as what is happening in the main drum. So the three-drum layout is not just an odd design choice.
Where The Three-Drum Design Makes The Most Sense
The three-drum setup is a good fit if you wash clothes a lot.
Families with kids
Kids’ items do well in smaller amounts. Keep their things separate from adult clothes.
Inner Garments
Smaller drums can hold inner garments with less mixing.
Bigger Weekly Laundry Loads
The 12 kg main drum can handle the bulk of regular laundry. It also works for larger home batches.
If You Already Sort Laundry
When you already separate items before washing, this setup may lower how often you run the washer. Still, it does not feel like a brand new wash process. It mainly changes how much you can do per cycle.
Xiaomi Three Drum washer: Cost
The Mijia District 3 has a 14 kg drum. iThome says China pricing is ¥5,999. The same report also notes a support price near ¥4,499 was shown in China.
These numbers are for China only. They are not a guide for what buyers in India could see when it launches.
Xiaomi does offer smart home items in other markets as well. Still, that does not mean this exact three-drum model will definitely be sold outside China. Wait until Xiaomi gives a clear word.
At this time, there is no solid sign that India will get it. There is also no clear confirmation of a larger worldwide release.
Is A Three-Drum Washer Better Than A Normal One?
If you live by yourself or in a small place, the extra wash sections may not be worth the higher price. The machine can also take up more floor space. Many people handle everyday laundry with an 8 kg to 10 kg washer.
A three-drum layout can help when the main goal is not only bigger loads. The bigger need is keeping clothes sorted into groups.

For example, a home might have enough for one big load. They may still want to split it into three groups. With a regular washer, you may need extra wash cycles just to keep the groups apart. Xiaomi is trying to handle the separation with the machine design.
You also have to plan for setup. Three drums often means a more involved setup process. It may call for extra steps during installation. Before buying, check the unit size, how the water inlet will connect, how drainage will work, and whether there is enough space at your home.
Final Thoughts
Xiaomi’s three-drum washer stands out, mainly because it deals with a basic day-to-day issue. People sort clothes by type, but most washers only run one main drum at a time.
The 14kg Mijia District 3 version tries to fix that. It uses a 12kg drum plus two smaller 1kg drums. Each section has its own water path. It also works with Xiaomi’s smart home setup.
This idea is not brand new. Xiaomi has shown multi-zone wash designs before. Still, the updated 14kg model gives a clear view of where this kind of machine could head. The goal is not only a larger main drum. It is also about washing different groups at once.
If you live in a big household, or you often split laundry into several batches, this layout may fit better. You could skip some extra wash cycles. If you do not do much sorting, a standard washer might be easier. It may also cost less. One more point. The unit covered here is made for the Chinese market. There is no confirmed plan for wide global sales yet.
