Club football rolls on this weekend with a busy line-up of must-watch fixtures across Europe.

The standout tie sees Manchester United and Manchester City renew their rivalry at Old Trafford, while Rangers take on Celtic in a high-pressure cup meeting at Ibrox.

Elsewhere, one of the most extraordinary recent stories in European football faces its sternest challenge yet, as Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg host Bayern Munich.

Saturday 12 September, kick-off 5pm BST

Lazio welcome AC Milan to the capital this weekend looking to maintain their flawless start to the Serie A season. Under former Milan midfield leader Gennaro Gattuso, Lazio have begun a league campaign with three straight victories for the first time since 2012.

The Rome club stretched that winning sequence by coming from behind to beat Udinese 2-1, with goals from new arrivals Davide Frattesi and Albert Gudmundsson.

Milan are just behind Roma, Inter Milan and Lazio, who all have perfect records, sitting on seven points after an encouraging opening under Ruben Amorim.

An improving Rangers side meet fierce rivals Celtic in a Scottish League Cup quarter-final. Rangers have won each of their last four matches to recover from an uncertain opening under new manager Derek McInnes. Scoring remains a concern, but three clean sheets in those four victories provide encouragement before they face a Celtic team with a perfect league record.

Celtic have failed to win in normal time in any of their last six trips to Ibrox.

It feels unusual to describe a league fixture as a David-versus-Goliath contest, but Elversberg against Bayern Munich unquestionably fits that description.

Elversberg were playing in one of Germany’s regional fourth-tier divisions only four years ago, before an outstanding rise that ended with promotion to the Bundesliga last season. Now the modest club from the small municipality of Spiesen-Elversberg, home to just 13,000 people, welcomes the giants of German football.

Bayern Munich travel to Elversberg’s Waldstadion an der Kaiserlinde, which has a capacity of 10,000, as 35-time German champions and one of Europe’s most powerful sides.

Elversberg are now mixing with genuine heavyweights and doing so impressively. They have won both of their opening two matches, against Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach, ahead of this weekend’s showdown. Another victory would represent the biggest result in the club’s history.

Manchester will come to a halt on Sunday, and not only because of the usual Mancunian Way traffic. Manchester United host Manchester City at Old Trafford as the red and blue halves of the city clash once more.

Michael Carrick got the better of City in this fixture last season, but an unconvincing United have made a mixed start to the campaign. City go into the Premier League weekend at the top of the table with maximum points.

Atletico Madrid will look to avoid a third successive defeat in all competitions when they visit Real Sociedad this weekend.

Diego Simeone’s team threw away a lead in a defeat to Liverpool in their Champions League opener, after having been heavily beaten by Athletic Club in La Liga last weekend. Another trip to the Basque country now brings a meeting with a Sociedad side targeting a top-six finish this season. The two teams go into this match level on points in La Liga.
