New Delhi. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated with reverence and enthusiasm across the country. Especially in Mumbai, Ganpati festival is a sight to behold. The cheers of Ganpati Bappa Morya and the sound of drums echoing in the streets make this festival special. Bollywood has also been showing this grandeur of Ganesh Utsav in its films for a long time. In many films, Ganpati puja and immersion were not limited to just religious ceremonies or songs but were used to give a new twist to the story.

Bollywood's famous film Don is a great example of this. Shahrukh Khan played the role of a don in this film released in 2006. In the Ganpati Visarjan scene of the film, the police chases the don amid the huge crowd and celebration. In this chaos, Don gets injured and goes into a coma. After this the story changes completely. In place of Don, his look-alike Vijay is sent to the gang. This incident happening during Ganpati Visarjan becomes one of the biggest twists to suspense and identity of the film.

Even in Sanjay Dutt's film Vastav The Reality, Ganpati Visarjan emerges as a very emotional and decisive part of the story. Due to circumstances, Raghu enters the world of crime and gradually becomes a dangerous gangster. At the end of the film, the Ganpati immersion procession is going on. Raghu reaches his mother amid the crowd all around and the cheers of Bappa. The mother understands that her son cannot return from the world of crime. After this she takes a decision which is counted among the most painful climax of Hindi cinema. Mother shoots her own son during Ganpati immersion.

In Hrithik Roshan's Agneepath too, Ganpati festival is associated with an important part of the story. Deva performs Vijay Ganapati puja during Shri Ganesha song and then proceeds to eliminate his enemy Surya. After Surya's murder, Kancha Cheena vows to eliminate Vijay and his family. In this way, the decision taken during the Ganpati festival lays the foundation for a big conflict in the story ahead.

Even in Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar 3, there is a big twist in the story during the Ganpati Aarti. Amitabh Bachchan's character Subhash Nagre is performing Ganpati Aarti when he is fired upon. This attack gives a new twist to the political conspiracies and power struggle going on in the film.

Watching these films, it becomes clear that Bollywood did not just use Ganesh Chaturthi as a scene of faith and celebration. Many times Bappa's presence became the reason for the most important turning point of the story. At some places identities changed, at some places relationships were tested and at some places enmity took a new form. This is the reason why these film scenes to Ganpati festival still hold a special place in the memories of the audience.
