New Delhi. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday declared former IAS officer Debasish Sharma as its candidate for Assam's Nagaon Lok Sabha seat. According to a New Indian Express report, the by-election in this Muslim-majority constituency was announced on October 6 following the resignation of two-time former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi.

Bordoloi had contested the 2026 assembly elections from Dispur seat in Guwahati on a BJP ticket and won. Sharma, who was the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Nagaon, took voluntary retirement (VRS) on September 3 and joined BJP on September 8.
On September 4, Congress's Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain had written a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam demanding that various decisions taken during Sharma's tenure as Nagaon DC be reviewed and appropriate action be taken on the complaints against him. This letter was written after complaints lodged by Hussain on 26 and 30 August and 3 and 4 September.
In his letter, Hussain wrote that during his tenure as DC and District Election Officer (DEO), Sharma had overseen important and sensitive aspects of election administration, including EVM management, voting arrangements, deployment of staff, preparation of polling stations and transportation arrangements.
The Dhubri MP wrote in his letter that 'Therefore, it is very important to review and examine all the election- instructions and decisions issued during his tenure to maintain the fairness and sanctity of the upcoming by-election. Recently, Assam Congress president and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi had also demanded that the Election Commission of India order an independent and time-bound inquiry into Sharma's tenure as DC-cum-DEO and alleged financial irregularities. Apart from BJP, only Trinamool Congress has announced the name of its candidate for Nagaon by-election, Abdul Salam.
