Donyell Malen strengthened his position at the top of the Serie A scoring charts with the opening goal in Monday evening’s clash between Torino and Roma, and in the process became the first player since the iconic Francesco Totti to score six or more goals in the opening four league matches of a season.

Donyell Malen of Roma was challenged by Eray Comert of Torino during the Serie A fixture between Torino and Roma at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino in Turin, Italy, on 14 September 2026.

Malen has been in sensational goalscoring form since arriving in Serie A from Aston Villa during the winter transfer window. In the second half of the 2025-26 campaign, he scored 14 league goals in 18 appearances, and he has already struck six times in four matches in 2026-27.

He started the season with a hat-trick against Fiorentina on the opening weekend, followed that with a brace against Lecce the next weekend, and then added another before half-time in Roma’s away game against Torino.

That strike means he has become only the third player in Roma history to score six or more goals in the first four matches of a Serie A season. He is the first Roma player to achieve it in more than 20 years.

The last player to do it was Francesco Totti, who scored six goals in the first four matches of the 2002-03 season. The only other Roma player to manage the feat was Pedro Mandredini, who netted seven goals in the opening four games of the 1960-61 season.
