Aston Villa are in advanced discussions over a fresh long-term contract for 24-year-old Ian Maatsen, according to an exclusive report by Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke on 10 September. Villa are keen to improve the Netherlands international’s terms despite the fact that his current contract already runs until 2030.

Maatsen has started all five matches this season, and his path into the regular starting side opened up after Lucas Digne left for Paris Saint-Germain. Unai Emery has a strong reason to get this agreement over the line because Maatsen has developed into far more than just cover at left-back. His five starts underline the manager’s faith in him following Digne’s departure.

Maatsen’s skill set makes that faith easy to understand. He provides progressive passing, carries the ball into dangerous areas and produces energetic overlapping runs that can stretch opposition defences. Those qualities fit neatly into Emery’s asymmetric system. In fast attacking transitions, Maatsen gives Villa width and speed without making their attacks predictable or channelled down only one route.

There is also a financial argument behind the move. A new deal would reward development and reinforce the club’s intent.
