Strengthening the midfield was right at the top of Old Trafford’s priority list in the summer of 2026.
With Casemiro departing and Manuel Ugarte failing to truly establish himself at M16 over two seasons, the 20-time English champions were left needing a fresh approach in the middle of the pitch.
By the time transfer deadline day arrived, Manchester United had successfully completed the midfield revamp they had targeted.
Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba and Andrey Santos all came in, joining Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes among Michael Carrick’s options and handing the Red Devils, at least on paper, one of the strongest midfield units in the league.
Tielemans has already made himself an integral part of Michael Carrick’s midfield, while he and Mainoo are beginning to build a powerful partnership in the centre of the park.
Santos, for his part, caught the eye in midfield during pre-season and also delivered a respectable display against Hull City.
Even so, he has had to accept a place on the bench in recent matches, which has led to questions over whether he will be able to secure an important role.
Carrick appears to have already suggested that the Brazilian will still have a major part to play. And while supporters wait to see that prediction come true, Matheus Cunha has offered Manchester United fans more encouragement about what the former Chelsea player could bring.
“Andrey Santos will be a breakout star this season. Fact — this guy is a very good player,” Cunha said in an interview with the Sky Sports Premier League channel.
“This is, I feel, good for him. We don’t need to put so much pressure on him to develop, but I know him from the national team, and I know all the skills he has. He’s an amazing guy, so lovely, and yeah, I think that will be a fact. He will surprise many eyes this year.”
After showing flashes of his quality in pre-season, Santos now needs to make the most of his opportunities and work his way into a significant role in Carrick’s side.
Because of his energetic ball-winning, outstanding resistance under pressure and excellent progressive passing, he could yet become hugely important for this Manchester United team.
