New Delhi, September 12 (IANS). The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Saturday directed Nilgiri Oil and Allied Industries and Aquagri Processing Pvt Ltd to immediately withdraw their products from the market after they were found to be violating food safety standards. The regulator said that both the products were found not to conform to food safety standards in laboratory tests and have been declared unsafe.
According to two separate recall notices issued by FSSAI, samples of Nilgiri Oil & Allied Industries' 'Shalimars Chef – Coriander Powder' were taken for testing under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Laboratory analysis found that the pesticide residues in the product exceeded prescribed standards and did not comply with regulations to food products and contaminants. After testing, the food analyst declared the product unsafe.
After the company appealed, the second sample was sent for re-testing, but even in the re-testing the product did not meet the prescribed standards. The authority subsequently maintained the unsafe category of the product.
In another case, a sample of carrageenan manufactured by Aquagri Processing Pvt Ltd was found to contain cadmium above the permissible limits.
According to FSSAI, the food analyst also declared this product unsafe. The company appealed as per rules, after which the sample was sent to the referral food laboratory for re-testing. Re-testing revealed the same findings and the product was deemed unsafe under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
FSSAI said both the products were manufactured in violation of applicable food safety regulations. Therefore, the concerned companies have been directed to immediately recall the affected products from the market and take all necessary steps under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Recall Procedures) Regulations, 2017.
The regulator clarified that under the recall process, companies will have to take back the stock available in the market, with distributors and retailers and ensure the safety of consumers.
